GPR stands for General Practice Residency. Most GPR programs are offered by hospitals which have a dental clinic located in large urban areas. The patients cared for are often children whose dental services are covered by Medicaid. The dental services provided differ widely depending on the program and hospital involved, however, most GPR programs are limited to bread and butter general dentistry.
A GPR often allows a dental associate to develop his or her basic dental speed and skills but generally is limited to the basic dental procedures taught in most dental schools. Most GPR graduates go on to later become dental associates with private dental practices. Most GPR programs are for a period of one or two years.
